Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

TCM has formed a unique system to diagnose and cure illnesses. It includes five distinct pillars:

1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a drug-free therapy, yielding no side effect, except for the feeling of relax and being grounded.

Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin needles in to specific points along the meridian, believed to help
unblock the clogged energy channels. There are more than 2, 000 such points in the body. Some practitioners
use heat, pressure, friction, suction, or electrical impulses along with or instead of the usual needles but the
goal is always the same: to stimulate these points.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than
acute problem, but plan on a minimum of a month to see significant changes. The acupuncturist may suggest
one or two treatments per week for several weeks, or monthly visits over time for health maintenance.

3. Moxibustion

In moxibustion, Chinese herbs (loose or compacted herbs) in sticks and cones used on skin or held close to
the skin to warm channels and points of the body. It is used to relieve traumatic pain or gynecological problems
and alleviate debilating conditions such as weakness and fatigue.

5. Tui Na (Meridian Massage)

Tui Na is a massage technique that moves QI in various parts of the body. It is used to stimulate the body
immune system to self heal, relieve inflammations and heal injuries.

How does QI (chi) stimulation work?

In Chinese there is a saying, ‘If there is pain there is no free flow’. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on
the belief that an essential life force called QI flows through the body along channels called meridians. These
meridians are like rivers within your body. Whenever a river flows, it brings with it water to nourish life. Likewise,
meridians transport life-giving energy and circulation that nourish every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the
body, providing good health and pain-free living.

A blocked river will cause an excessive amount of pressure on one side and restrict the water flow on the other.
Similarly, when a meridian becomes blocked, QI cannot move freely, causing excess QI to build up in another
area, leading to to variety of symptoms including pain.

What causes QI to become blocked?

Some of the causes are:
  • Physical trauma
  • Emotional trauma
  • Inherited weakness of QI
  • Poor diet
  • Chemical, physical and emotional stress

Do the needles hurt?

They do not hurt as much as one might think. Yet,
some people do not believe it unit they try it. People
learn throughout their life to be very careful and avoid
sharp objects. They unconsciously transfer this fear to
needles. Needles are typically not much thicker than a
piece of hair, and their insertion is practically
painless. It is nothing like receiving an ordinary
injection. In some cases, you will not even know the
needles are in place. In other cases, there may be
some tingling, warmth, heaviness, or a feeling of the
QI (read below) moving up and down the channels.
Most people find needles extremely relaxing and may
fall asleep during the treatment.

Do the needles safe?

They are extremely safe. They are sterilized, used
once, and disposed of after each use.

4. Herbology

Together with acupuncture, herbal medicine is a major pillar of
Chinese medicine. They can also be powerful adjunct to
acupuncture. Herbs can strengthen your body or clear it of
excess problems like a cold, fever or acute pain. Herbs can be
used daily.
2. Cupping

Cupping is a method commonly used after an acupuncture
session or sometimes used instead of the acupuncture. It
treats diseases by causing local congestion. A partial vacuum
is created in certain small plastic or glass jars (usually by
means of heat when glass cups are used), then applied to the
skin to draw up the under-laying tissue/muscle to form blood
stagnation. This method is very effective for injuries, arthritis
and many other common complaints. Single cups may be
applied to smaller areaa and several cups to a wider region.
The cups may be moved over large flat areas as well (known
as moving cupping). The process feels like a massage,
although generally it is more effective.
